(Delta), has been authorized by Ultramar Inc. to conduct a
. hydrogeologic investigation at Beacon Station No. 696, located at 2448 West Kettleman Lane, Lodi,
San Joaquin County, California (Figure 1). A copy of Delta's Proposed Closure Plan, dated
May 26, 1993, has previously been submitted to the appropriate regulatory agencies for review. The
proposed closure plan is intended to provide justification for regulatory closure of the site. This letter
describes additional work to be performed as part of the investigation presented in the closure plan.
The closure plan proposed drilling three on-site soil borings and one off-site soil boring to a depth
of 50 feet below the surface, and submitting soil samples collected from depths of 10, 20, 30, 40,
45, and 50 feet for laboratory analyses of petroleum hydrocarbons. The proposed investigation will
be modified by drilling two additional off-site soil borings. Each of the three off-site soil borings will
be advanced to approximately 3 feet above the water table (approximately 52 feet). Soil samples will
be collected from each of the off-site borings from immediately above the water table interface, and
a Hydropunch sampling device will be used to collect ground water samples from the upper water
table aquifer. The locations of the proposed soil borings are shown in Figure 2. The soil borings
will be drilled and sampled in accordance with the methods described in Appendix A of the closure
plan.
Soil samples will be analyzed in the field for the presence of organic vapors using a photoionization
detector (PID). The soil samples collected from just above the water table in each boring and the
ground water samples, will be submitted for laboratory analyses of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and xylenes, and total -petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline, using methods approved by the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Health Services. A quality
assurance plan was presented in Appendix A of the closure plan.
Delta Delivers Solutions
