RECOGNIZING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS <br /> A hazardous material is any material which because of its quantity, concentration , <br /> or physical or chemical characteristics, poses a present or potential hazard <br /> to human health and safety or to the environment. <br /> Hazardous materials include many common as well as uncommon materials used <br /> in large and small manufacturing processes , service and maintenance industries , <br /> and in other types of businesses. <br /> Practical ways to recognize a hazardous material . <br /> The easiest way to recognize a hazardous material is to read a proper label <br /> for the material . A material should be considered hazardous if any of the <br /> following words or phrases appear on the container or label . <br /> Danger Irritant Flammable <br /> Warning Sensitizer Combustable <br /> Caution Reactive Corrosive <br /> Hazard Carcinogen Poison <br /> Toxic Oxidizer Radioactive <br /> Aviod contact (with skin or eyes) <br /> Do not store or use near heat <br /> Use with adequate ventilation <br /> Avoid breathing vapors <br /> Wear protective equipment (gloves , goggles , respirator) <br /> Any other word or phrase which indicates that the product may be <br /> harmful to humans or the environment. <br /> Other indicators on labels and containers include OOT diamond symbols and <br /> graphic hazard symbols such as a skull and crossbones or flames. <br /> Hazardous materials and products may also be identified based on general <br /> characteristics or composition. The following materials must be considered <br /> as hazardous: <br /> All compressed gases except compressed air. <br /> Materials that contains greater than 1% of a harardous substance <br /> and for which Material Safety Data Sheet is required. <br />
