Corrective Action Plan Page 34
Carbon Adsorption Unit Plumbing. After passing through the air stripper, the treated
water is transferred to the carbon adsorption units (GAC-1) [Note a bypass line is
provided so that water can be pumped directly from the surge-tank (ST-1) to the carbon
adsorption units without passing through the air-stripper if that mode of operation should
be required ] The rate of water flow into the GAC units is monitored by a pulse-type, flow
meter (FI-1)
The plumbing for the carbon adsorption units is arranged such that they are connected in
series and a piping manifold with 8 valves (V-1) can be set so that the relative upstream
and downstream order of the vessels can be reversed Pressure gauges (PI-1) are located
in the inlet and outlet lines of each vessel so that the pressure drops across each unit and
across the combined two-vessel array can be monitored
An injection port (VAI-1) is provided in the influent line to the GAC assembly for
administration of algaecides if such should be required to control biological fouling of the
carbon units
Sampling ports (VSP-1) provide for recovery of specimens of the influent to the carbon
adsorption system, recovery of specimens of water that has passed through the first of the
senes-connected vessels (i a at the "mid-point") and for recovery specimens of the final
effluent from the groundwater treatment system where it flows out of the downstream
vessel before it is discharged to the storm-sewer
Exhausted carbon is removed and the vessels recharged with fresh carbon through ports in
the top Drain valves (V-6) at the bottom of each unit permits the carbon vessels to be
fully emptied of water before they are disassembled for maintenance
The accumulated total volume of water treated by the groundwater treatment system is
recorded by an integrating flow totalizer (FT-1) situated in the effluent line from the
carbon adsorption unit array where it enters the underground pipe that carnes the clean
water to the storm sewer
Pipe Unions
1
The principal valves (V-1, V-2 and V-3) in the groundwater treatment system plumbing
have true-union, or flanged, couplings and these are supplemented by additional true-
union, straight couplings (PC-1 and PC-2) that permit the pipelines and manifolds to be
readily assembled and disassembled for ease of construction and maintenance The
locations of these supplemental, true-union couplings are shown schematically on Figure
11 [Note The actual number and locations of true union couplings may vary from those
shown and will be determined in the field based on final pipe routings and the layout of
system appurtenances ]
