0254 North Star will have tanker on site around 0800 to pump out acid tank. All acid puddle on
ground neutralized with sodium carbonate.
3/5/2019
Ultrasonic test was performed at and around the leak point in the acid tank. The result of the test
indicated that the metal surrounding the area is 1/4" thick and ok to weld.
4/2/2019
Tank capacity= 1500 gallons
Tank was topped of 2 days' prior
1" of usage (using tape measure) from bottom plastic see through tube to the bottom of torpedo =
19.36 gals (20 gals est.)
Pumped sulfuric acid from bulk sulfuric tank into 250gal poly totes. Total of 6 totes estimated at
230 gallons per tote for total of 1,380 gals
Torpedo measurement from 0200-0830=2" or 40 gal lost
Leak rate calculation(40 gal- 390 min= 0.10256 gal/min loss or 6.15 gal/hr.)
Total time of known leak 2300-1000 (11hrs)
6.15gals * l lhrs. = 67.65gal estimated of sulfuric acid
Recovered from one 55gal poly drum(3/4 filled)with remaining balance pumped from spill
containment to top off one 55gal drum. Drum is processed to be ship to authorized handler
Reclaimed 5gal poly drum and add back into acid tank
Unable to capture through the use of poly drum, spill containment or other method due to wind
as loss to the ground=7.65 gal
Total estimated time of leak prior to discovery 2100-2300 (2hrs)
6.15gal * 2hrs= 12.3gal estimated loss onto ground
For calculation 1 gallon of 93% sulfuric acid= 15.303 lbs.
Total gallons spilled or released for entire event; 67.65 + 12.3 = 79.95 gal or 1223.47lbs
Total captured: 55gal in poly drum+ 5gal reclaim= 60gal or 918.181bs
Total uncaptured but contained: 19.95gal or 305.29lbs
