Installation of XW-1
nea11L mid Safely Plan,AUGUST,1995
0"H&S.DOC
GENERAL SAFETY MEASURES
I'lic following safety conditions are to be maintained and, where applicable, available to all
personnel on the site at any time.
A substantial supply of cool (60° F or less) or cold (iced) potable water is to be maintained on site
at all times(3 to 5 gallons per person per day is recommended).
All personnel shall give special attention to observing themselves and fellow workers for signs of
_ heat stress. All personnel should be aware of these symptoms and recognize them in themselves
and fellow workers. Work schedules are to be modified as necessary to prevent Heat stress.
_ All personnel need to take into account the loss of body electrolytes by perspiration. The
recommendation provided by the Company Physician regarding conservation and restoration of
electrolytes includes drinking plenty of water and a normal diet. The use of salt tablets is not
recommended if a normal diet is maintained. Gatorade serves little purpose except to add calories
to the diet.
Tl1e use of alcohol during off hours should be minimized due to the dehydrating effect of alcohol.
Particulate masks shall be available and worn when wind conditions result in airborne particulates.
In the event of accidental skin contact with the impacted waters or soils the contacted area is to
be washed with clean water. Protective gloves should be used by those who make contact with
the excavated soil.
Personnel leaving the work area shall brush all soil off of their boots and clothing prior to moving
out of the area.
Soil clinging to the drill stem or other equipment is to be removed before leaving the work area.
The decontamination procedures to be used during the course of work are limited due to the low
potential exposure hazard presented by the material.
Emergency decontamination of personnel follows the procedures described above where possible.
This decontamination may require only the removal of personal protective equipment.
A-10 N
 CONDOR
