Box 239
Tracy, CA 95378
GROUND WATER REMEDIATION, TRIPLE E PRODUCE, TRACY, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the revised work plan, dated July 1993, for ground water remediation at the Triple
E Produce facility in Tracy. The work plan addresses all but one of the comments in my 6 July
1993 letter.
The first comment of my 6 July 1993 letter was that the plume should be saturated with bacteria,
nutrients, and oxygen between MW-4A and MW-7, not just between MW-4A and MW-2. The
revised work plan still proposes to saturate the plume between only MW-4A and MW-2, with the
assumption that " ... the bacteria will naturally flow in the direction of the plume, combining with
bacteria injected at MW-6 and MW-7, and destroying the target contamination." Since this
remediation is being conducted on an experimental basis, it is acceptable to initially saturate the
plume only between MW-4A and MW-2. If it is shown that saturating the plume between these two
wells is not effective at reducing chloroform levels between MW-2 and MW-7, then it may be
necessary, in the future, to saturate the plume between MW-2 and MW-7.
It is not clear in the work plan's schedule if the nitrate and phosphate baseline samples will be taken
before bacteria inoculation or which wells will be sampled for baseline levels of these two
constituents. Baseline sampling should be conducted in monitoring wells MW-4A, MW-2, MW-6,
and MW-7. This sampling should take place at least two weeks before bacteria inoculation, so that
any errors in sample collection, handling, or laboratory procedures may be corrected with additional
sampling before inoculation with bacteria and nutrients occurs.
With the schedule of activities outlined in the work plan and assuming remediation activities can
begin within two weeks of your receiving this letter, the results of the remediation efforts should be
reported according to the following schedule:
First Quarter Report 15 November 1993
Progress Report 15 February 1994
