• Maintaining proper housekeeping around and on the rig at all times. Tools should
be stored in a manner that permits convenient access but also provides for
personnel safety.
• Keep platforms, walkways and scaffolding free of obstructions and excess grease
or oil that could cause a surface to become slick and dangerous.
• Store gasoline only in an approved container that has a spark arrestor.
• Check rig equipment prior to starting work; repair or replace faulty items.
• Handle augers with care. Use proper lifting technique; use a tool hoist if possible.
Stay clear of rotating augers.
• Level and stabilize the drill rig prior to raising the mast.
• Watch for slippery ground when mounting/dismounting the platform.
• Unattended boreholes must be adequately covered.
• Avoid drilling during an electrical storm.
5.2 Chemical Hazards
It is anticipated that the potential chemical exposure to site personnel should be for short periods
of time (no more than two hours) and the levels of waste oil constituents anticipated are not a
major concern. Additionally, little or no drill cuttings will be generated. Air exposure
monitoring will not be performed during the site investigation
Skin contact with potentially contaminated soil or water will be minimized by wearing personal
protective clothing (as described in Section 7.0).
Ingestion of contaminated materials will be minimized by good personal hygiene during
decontamination(i.e., thoroughly washing face and hands with soap and water before eating or
drinking).
5.3 Noise Hazards
The primary noise hazard at this site is from the drilling equipment. Previous surveys indicate
that drill rigs may produce continuous and impact noise at or above the PEL. Personnel within
25 feet of an operating rig shall wear hearing protective devices (either muffs or plugs).
5.4 Underground Utilities
The project site is currently cleared under an active Underground Service Alert ticket. The
contractor will keep the ticket open until the project is completed.
5.5 Traffic Hazards
As drilling will be conducted in a parking area with thru-traffic,motor vehicles may be a hazard.
The work area will therefore be coned or barricaded.
A-5
