Prior to the removal of the UST. Thorpe removed the soil <br /> and debris in the UST. Approximately 60 cubic yards of material was excavated from around <br /> the UST and placed in a stockpile and sarnpled. <br /> After the UST was removed, the soil surrounding the UST was observed to be stained and had <br /> strong hydrocarbon odors. The UST was observed to have a conical bottom. fThe removed°UST-71 <br /> ,was fourld-to'be intact with s=.Mall. holes and pitting: Prior-to-offsite disposal, the-UST_ s <br /> labeled with-idcntification ii«n-ibei_39-05.15721"'and the interior washed, the liquid contained and <br /> disposed of offsite by American Oil. The UST was loaded onto a truck for transport offsite for <br /> t <br /> disposal.= - <br /> Following the removal of the UST, the&CEHD.inspector requested that one soil sample be, <br /> collected and analyzed from below the fomier UST, one from a side wall,'and'one from the soil <br /> stockpile. Tlie three samples collected,iticluded:A <br /> 4p -ilple;,15UST-BOT-13, collected from a deptht6f.5 feet below the bottom-6-the UST ; <br /> (13 feet below ground surface); <br /> • Sample 15UST-SSW-7 was collected from the south wall of.the former UST location at a <br /> depth of 7 feet below ground surface, and <br /> • :'Sample,15UST-STOCKPILE, collected from the,•stockpiled soil. <br /> The samples were collected by a Treadwell &Rollo geologist from the native material at the <br /> depth below the UST requested by the SJCEHD inspector. Each sample was collected directly <br /> from the excavator bucket, hand-packed in a 6-inch stainless steel tube, sealed with TeflonrM <br /> sheeting and plastic end caps, and labeled. The soil sample was placed in an ice-cooled <br /> container for transport to the laboratory under chain-of-custody protocol. The samples were <br /> shipped to Curtis & Tompkins, Ltd., a California-certified laboratory, located in Berkeley, <br /> Califomia. <br /> As required by the SJCEHD pci nit, the samples were analyzed for Unknown Fuel analytical <br /> suite which included: <br /> • TPHg (carbon range C7- C12), TPHd (carbon range CIO--C24), using U.S. Environmental <br /> Protection Agency (EPA) Testing Method 8015 modified, <br /> • Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Testing Method <br /> 8021B, <br />
