results of the U S Department of Agriculture investigation are presented as Figure 9
The 521 North Cherokee Lane site is underlain by the Kingdon fine sandy loam and the Tokay fine sandy
loam(USDA, 1992) The Kingdon fine sandy loam is a very deep, moderately well drained, nearly level soil
on low fan terraces of the Mokelumne River Permeability is moderate in the Kingdon fine sandy loam and
most of the areas where the soil is present are used for irrigated crops, orchards,or vineyards The Tokay fine
sandy loam is a very deep, well drained, nearly level soil on low fan terraces of the Mokelumne River
Permeability is moderately rapid in the Tokay soil Most areas are used for irrigated crops, orchards, or
vineyards
4 1 3 Regional Hydrology
Past Investigations Past hydgeologic investigations conducted in this area have included Piper and others,
1939,Thomasson and others, 1960, Olmstead and Davis, 1961, Brice, 1977,and Page, 1986 Alt available
geologic and hydrogeologic data available from other hydrogeological investigations at soil and groundwater
contamination investigation sites in the Lodi area were reviewed
• Surface Waters The principal surface water body located near the site vicinity is the Mokelumne River which
is part of the contributing drainage system of the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta area Beneficial uses of
tributary rivers of the Delta include agricultural water supply, domestic water supply, aquatic habitat, and
recreation Water quality in the Delta and its mayor tributaries has been studied for many years Primary
regulatory agency concerns are impacts from nutrients and pesticides in agricultural drainage and their effects
on aquatic species (U S Geological Survey, 1996, 1998) Metals such as selenium are also a concern In
general, water quality in the minor sloughs and irrigation ditches is poorer because of the concentration of
constituents from agricultural runoff and the lack of flushing or mixing with water from higher quality
sources Water within the smaller Delta tributaries, such as the Mokelurnne River, tends to be of higher
quality because agricultural runoff is a smaller proportion of the total flow(U S Geological Survey, 1998)
Mokelumne River The Mokelumne River originates in the Central Sierra Nevada in Alpine County,
approximately 130 miles east-northeast of Lodi The river is fed by numerous tributary streams and receives
runoff from a 627-square-mile watershed area upstream of Comanche and Pardee Reservoirs(U S Geological
Survey, 1995) These two reservoirs, approximately 15 and 35 miles east of Lodi, respectively, are used for
flood control, storage, and recreation Downstream of Comanche Reservoir, the Mokelumne River meanders
Ma,nSD 1Enwronmen1a11PanoarTexacolReportslSAR1203 wpd Page 19
