- I
f ,
f
ANALYTICAL METHOD; LOGY
 I
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) Extractahles by GC-FID
I F
Extraction Procedure:
WATER - Luft Field Manual "
i
A 1 liter sample is poured into a 2 liter separatory funnel, 3x100 ml extractions
with methylene chloride (2 minute shake outs) are ;completed. The methylene chloride
is decanted off and concentrated to a 5 ml final volume.
'II i
SOIL - Luft Field Manual s
A 30 gram, or other appropriate aliquot of soil, is mixed with 10 grams of washed
sodium sulfate. 100 mis of methylene chloride is added to the soil and placed on a
mechanical shaker for 1 hour. The liquid is decanted off and the process is repeated
with an additional 50 ml of methylene chloride. The ca"mbined solvent extracts are
filtered through sodium sulfate and the extract is 'concentrated to a 5 ml final
volume.
GC ANALYSIS -
An appropriate volume of the sample extract is injected into a Gas Chromatograph
equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector (FID), 6 split/ splitless capillary injector
(operated in the splitless mode), and a fused silica';capiIlary column. The TPH
fraction is quantitated as gasoline and/or #2 diesel fue:0 (and/or different petroleum
hydrocarbon fuel types if requested, such as JP-4 jet fuel) based on relative I
retention times and examination of the elution profile. The TPH fraction
quantitation is based on chromatographic peak areas agaunst a multipoint standard
curve.
0
}
II
i
CHEMwEST ANALYTICAL LABORATORIES.iINC
i
