Shell Oil Company CRL1
April 19, 1995 (9447-8617)
' — T 3.2 UST Removal, Initial Soil Sampling and Analysis
tOn December 2, 1994, Fugro personnel witnessed the excavation and removal of four
single-walled steel gasoline USTs (two 10,000-gallon and two 6,000-gallon) and associated pump
islands and piping by Golden West General Contractors (Golden West) Visual inspection of the
' tanks did not reveal any holes The tanks were triple-rinsed by Crosby and Overton, Inc and
transported to the Erickson Inc disposal facility located in Richmond, California The waste
manifests for rinsate and tank disposal are included in Appendix D
tEric Travena of the SJCDEH observed the UST removal, but left the site shortly
thereafter Because a SJCDEH representative is required to witness all regulatory-required
' sampling, soil samples were not collected beneath the former USTs, piping and pump islands
until December 6, 1994 Meanwhile, Fugro collected 18 soil samples (SPI-A and B through
SP9-A and B) from approximately 450 cubic yards of soil stockpiled on the site during
' excavation activities
Between December 2 and 6, 1994, Golden West removed an additional 150 cubic yards
' of soil from the bottom of the UST excavation in anticipation of installing two new 15,000-gallon
double-walled fiberglass tanks
On December 6, 1994, Fugro personnel, under Eric Travena's direction, collected soil
samples from the base of the UST excavation (approximately 18 5 feet bgs), an estimated 6 feet
below the ends of the two former 10,000-gallon gasoline USTs (ES3, EN3, ES4, and EN4) and
' the former northwestern 6,000 gallon UST (ES2 and EN2) Two soil samples were also collected
approximately two feet (14 5 feet bgs) below the ends of the former southeastern 6,000-gallon
UST (ESI and ENI) Additionally, six soil samples (TI-T6) were collected beneath the former
piping and pump islands at approximately 4 5 feet bgs Four soil stockpile samples were
collected from the additional excavated soil (OSPI-A, OSPI-B, OSP2-A and OSP2-13)
fInitial excavation and stockpile soil sampling locations are shown on Figures 2, and 4
The initial UST, piping and pump island excavation samples were analyzed within 24 to 48
hours Soil sampling analytical results are summarized in Tables 1 and 3
All soil samples were delivered under chain-of-custody to National Environmental
Testing, Inc (NET) of Santa Rosa, California, a State-certified analytical laboratory The samples
were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline, by Modified EPA Method
8015, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX), by EPA Method 8020, and Total
Lead Selected stockpile samples were also analyzed for organic lead and metals Analytical
reports and chain-of-custody forms are included in Appendices B and C
I94478617 BRP- - - - - -` - - 3
