LLNL Emergency Management Plan
Rev 24
January 2019
10.4 Public Inquiries
In the event of an Operational Emergency, the PAO will be the single LLNL point-of-contact for
the news media and a principal source of information for Laboratory employees and community
officials. PAO personnel will respond to calls for information from the general community as
resources allow and will use news releases and other approved information to provide emergency
public information.
The PAO will also make available and publicize through the news media a telephone number
and website the public may contact for updated emergency information. If the JIC is activated,
all calls from the public and media will be referred there for response. Local government will
support response to local public calls concerning the offsite emergency response and public
health and safety.
10.5 Information Management Review
After activation of the EOC, the EOC Coordinator is responsible for identifying a Derivative
Classifier for the EOC, who is responsible for reviewing documents that will be released to the
public, including news releases, to ensure that sensitive or classified information is not released.
10.6 NNSA Field Office and Headquarters Coordination
Initial news release or public statements require NNSA/LFO Emergency Manager approval;
whereas, subsequent emergency public information is coordinated with the NNSA/LFO
Emergency Manager. If necessary, the LLNL PIM may communicate directly with the HQ
representative or delegate such activity to the PAO DOC Commander or JIC Manager.
95
