Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Re BJJ Company, Inc , 757 East I Ph Street, Tracy, CA (Heinz Facility)
Dear Mr. Knoll:
le, This letter is being submitted on behalf of BJJ Company, Inc to update you on the status of
monitoring well MW-1 at the subject site As you are aware, MW-1 was buried when an
asphalt road was constructed over its location at the site We have made several attempts to
locate the well, but have not been successful Evidently when the area was regraded, the
wellhead and traffic box were destroyed Efforts to locate the well have included using a metal
detector on two separate occasions, and most recently, excavation of an area of approximately
150 square feet Unfortunately, no evidence of the well could be found Although this well is
not germain to the site groundwater monitoring program, ideally it would be desirable to locate
the well so it could be properly destroyed However, considering the attempts already made,
we do not believe that further work toward locating MW-1 is warranted This position is based
on several considerations
The purpose of destruction of wells which are no longer useful as specified in Section 20 of
"Water Well Standards State of California" 1) Assure that groundwater supply is protected and
preserved for further use, 2) Eliminate the potential physical hazard
Because the well is only 20 feet deep, is completed in low-permeability sods, and is covered by
an asphalt road, it presents no threat to further use of groundwater In fact, because
groundwater occurs within seven feet of ground surface, little or no protection is provided by
the vadose zone A spill on bare soil at the site would, in virtually all cases, present a greater
risk to groundwater than a spill on the asphalt overlying the inactive monitoring well
(Lo13092 t►c)
