File No 43991
12 lune 2000
Page 2
' The analytical laboratory analyzed all samples for ethanol by EPA Method 8260B Ethanol
was not detected in any of the confirmation, stockpile,or grab-ground water samples Ethanol
was detected in pipeline soil sample P-7 only at a concentration of 72,000 micrograms per
kilogram (gg/Kg) or 72 parts per million Analytical results of UST/piping removal sampling
are included in Table I
' San Joaquin County requested that additional soil and ground water sampling be conducted
beneath the sample P-7 location under supervision of either a California Registered Geologist
or a Licensed Engineer recognized by the state of California
Field Investigation
' On 2 June 2000, ACG collected one grab-ground water sample and two soil samples from a
single geoprobe soil boring advanced at the former P-7 sample location V&W Drilling Inc
advanced the soil bonng SB-1 using the GeoProbe process to a depth of 12 feet bgs The
GeoProbe dnlling ng encountered ground water at a depth of 10 5 feet bgs The ACG
' representative collected soil samples from the SB-1 at the depths of 6 feet and 9 feet bgs
The GeoProbe dnll ng produced 4-foot continuous cores encased in plastic 15-inch diameter
' plastic tubing The ACG geologist observed and descnbed the soil lithology using the Unified
Soils Classification System The ACG geologist collected the soil samples for chemical
analysis by cutting a section of the plastic drill-core casing with a saw, and sealing the casing
section with Teflon sheeting and rubber end caps
The ACG geologist monitored the breathing zone for the V&W driller and screened soil
samples using a photo-ionizing detector (PID) equipped with the appropriate tamp for
' detecting ethanol Soil samples were screened at the depths of 3, 9,and 1 l feet bgs
To collect a grab-ground water sample, the V&W dnller drove a hydropunch device 4 feet
below the bottom of the borehole and pulled back the device to expose 3 feet of screen
' between the interval of 13 to 16 feet bgs The V&W driller removed ground water from the
borehole using a section of new unused flexible plastic tubing affixed with a check value at
the downhole end and applied a pumping motion to provide suction The grab-ground water
sample was poured into two 40-milliliter glass VOAs
All samples were labeled and preserved in a cooled ice-chest A couner transported the
samples to the analytical laboratory accompanied with a chain-of-custody document
' Geoanalytical Laboratories, Inc of Modesto, California(Geoanalytical), analyzed the soil and
grab-ground water samples for ethanol by EPA Method 8260B
' The V&W driller properly abandoned the GeoProbe boring by filling the open borehole from
the bottom with Portland cement grout using a funnel and PVC tremie pipe The San Joaquin
County representative observed grouting activities
' Investigations Results
We have attached a bonng log of GeoProbe bonng SB-1 The soil lithology encountered in
SB-1 consisted of the following
' • Fine gravel trench backfill to a depth of 3 5 feet bgs,
' s lenvironmentallcurrentjobs14399 heinz plant tank invcstigationW399 report doe
ANCERSON CONSULTING GROUP —
