' waste landfill Approximately 200 tons of soil was removed from the tank
excavation All ground water removed from the tank excavation was
pumped to a temporary storage tank for subsequent treatment and
disposal to the sanitary sewer The ground water was treated to non-
detectable concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
' (TPH-g) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) using
granular activated carbon prior to disposal In total, approximately 12,280
gallons of ground water was pumped from the excavation during soil
' excavation activities at former tank site 1
2.3 SITE CHARACTERIZATION
' Following the soil and ground water removal activities, ERM conducted a
soil and ground water investigation to determine the extent of soil and
ground water impact in the vicinity of the former tank location The
initial investigation was conducted on 2 and 3 April 1998
As summarized in the Tank Removal Report, the investigation consisted
' of
• Collecting soil samples from the unsaturated zone (approximately 3 to
5 feet bgs) at two locations,
o Collecting soil samples from directly above the water table
(approximately 7 feet bgs) at seven locations,
o Collecting ground water HydroPunch samples from five locations, and
® Installing and sampling one monitoring well (MW-1) downgradient of
the former tank location (the assumed downgradient direction was
based on water level data from surrounding sites provided by
PHS/EHD)
' The results of this investigation indicated that shallow soil impacts in the
vicinity of the former tank location were limited to the immediate vicinity
of the tank and were removed during soil excavation activities Petroleum
' hydrocarbons were found in soil samples collected immediately above the
water table, but were determined to be associated with movement of
ground water Ground water impacts were determined to be limited to
' the immediate area downgradient of the former tank location
' Based on the results of the investigation, the PHS/EHD requested that
two additional morutoring wells be installed to confirm the ground water
flow direction and to determine the concentration of petroleum
hydrocarbons immediately downgradient and upgradient of the former
' ERM 7 HEINZ USA-3374 60-3/27/00
