1
• Only isolated detections of volatile organic compounds (VO(
BTEX compounds)are present in subsurface soils Because
1 limited detections, the migration of these compounds from so._,`
is not expected to represent a significant exposure pathway for _
commercial/industrial workers
' However, construction workers or others involved in intrusive subsurface
activities at the former tank sites may be exposed to residual constituents
' in subsurface soils Under this scenario, exposure may occur via the
following routes
' • Incidental ingestion,
• Dermal contact,
• Inhalation of VOCs released from soils that are exposed during
excavation or other intrusive activities, and
' • Inhalation of fugitive dust released from exposed soil (non-volatile
compounds only, as there are no non-volatile compounds present in
soil, this pathway will not be evaluated further)
5.2.3 Ground Water
For the site, the only realistic ground water exposure pathway involves
the inhalation of VOCs that may be released from the water table into
ambient air Such exposures may occur under current conditions (when
the depth to ground water averages 4 5 to 7 5 feet bgs), and during
construction activities (when the depth to ground water may be less than
' 1 foot bgs)
' Other potential exposure pathways related to ground water were not
considered to be realistic for these sites, as explained below
' • Shallow ground water in the vicinity of the former tank sites is not
used for water supply Further, due to the adjacent commercial/
industrial facilities and ongoing remediation at neighboring properties,
' beneath which contaminated ground water persists, it is unlikely that
shallow ground water in the vicinity will be used as a water supply in
the foreseeable future Thus, exposures associated with residential and
' industrial use of ground water are not realistic for the former tank
sites
' • Impacted ground water is confined to a small area in the immediate
vicinity of the former tanks This observation is based on the ground
water monitoring performed at the tank sites Thus, the migration of
ground water to adjacent surface water bodies and the migration of
' ERM 20 HEINZ USA 3374 60.3/27/60
