Draft
SLUG TESTING
•
To aid in the evaluation of site hydrogeology,ERM performed slug testing
in selected monitoring wells at the site Falling head and rising head slug
tests were performed in monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-4, and
MW-6 These wells were selected because they are located immediately
downgradient of each former underground tank location and may be used
for performing ground water remediation at the site
SLUG TEST PROCEDURES
The slug tests were conducted by rapidly lowering into (falling head test)
' and raising out of (rising head) a prefabricated metal rod (slug) into and
out of the water in each selected monitoring well, respectively, and
monitoring the water level recovery
Prior to starting the test at each well, a pressure transducer was lowered to
the bottom of the monitoring well The cable supporting the transducer
was then secured at the top of the well The transducer was then
connected to the data logger which was then set to record the test The
water level in the well was measured with the transducer The water level
was then measured with an electronic water level meter to confirm the
depth recorded by the pressure transducer
iThe falling head test was conducted prior to the rising head test in each
well The data logger was set to begin recording data prior to starting the
test The falling head test was then begun by rapidly lowering the slug
into the well so that the slug is approximately 1 foot above the pressure
transducer at the bottom of the well
The data logger was started as the slug was lowered into the well The
data logger was programmed to record water levels at a very rapid
frequency to account for the short duration of changing water Ievels that
occur during a slug test For the test conducted at the site, the sampling
' frequency was as follows
• Every 0 2 seconds for the first 20 seconds,
• Ever second from 20 seconds to 1 minute,
,
• Every 12 seconds from 1 minute to 10 minutes, and
' ERM 1 CLIENT NAME/WO NUMBER-3/8/99
