EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1
On behalf of Heinz USA (Heinz), Environmental Resources Management
(ERM) has prepared this report as a follow-up to the report titled
Underground Storage Tank Removal Activities at Former Heinz Facility (ERM,
22 May 1998) Specifically, this report presents the results of the soil and
ground water investigation performed on 11 February 1999 at the former
Heinz facility in Tracy,California (site) This report provides the
additional site investigation information required based upon an
evaluation of results from the current and previous site investigations An
evaluation of the need for remediation and potential remediation
technologies is also presented Finally, this report presents a plan and
schedule for implementation of remedial activities
'
GENERAL BACKGROUND
' ERM identified and subsequently removed two gasoline underground
storage tanks (USTs) at the site on 18 February 1998, which included
M removing 353 tons of contaminated soil from the UST excavations and
pumping 20,280 gallons of contaminated ground water from the
excavations ERM also investigated soil and ground water in the areas
1 surrounding each former UST location to characterize and define the
extent of chenucal impacts
1 Based on the findings of these previous investigations, San Joaquin
County and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
' requested that Heinz perform additional characterization of the site to
determine the vertical distribution of impacted soil and ground water at
each UST location In addition, the agencies requested that Heinz provide
an evaluation of potential remedial strategies for compounds, specifically
benzene, in ground water at the site
11 FEBRUARY 1999, INVESTIGATION
' Several soil and ground water samples were collected to provide
information concerning the vertical distribution of impacted soil and
' ground water A review of the soil sampling results indicates that the
extent of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) and benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) impacts at the site has been
rdefined The sampling results indicate that the extent of TPH-g and BTEX
impact is limited to shallow depths
' v
