1
Environmental
Mr Harlin Knoll Resources
4 November 1998 Management
Page z
monitoring wells usually required to define the ground water flow
direction, the County recommended that the ground water flow
information generated at the BJJ Trucking site be used to defile the
ground water flow direction at the site The BJJ Trucking site is also
located at 757 1111, Street By referencing the BJJ Trucking site ground
water flow information, only one monitoring well was needed
downgradient of each former UST location
On behalf of Heinz, ERM agreed to conduct sampling in MW-1 and
MW-2 for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g), benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX) compounds, and methyl
tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) No TPH as diesel was detected during the
tank removal and subsequent investigation activities, therefore, no
sampling for TPH-d was necessary These two wells were sampled to
document that the concentrations of TPH-g, BTEX, and MTBE were
remaining stable or decreasing As stated in the 22 May 1998 letter, if the
sampling results indicate that the concentrations of TPH-g, BTEX,and
MTBE were static or decreasing, the plume would be considered stable
Based on this low risk, Heinz would then submit a request for site
closure to the County
As anticipated, the results of the ground water samples collected in these
two wells from May through September 1998 indicated that the
concentrations of TPH-g, BTEX, and MTBE were decreasing or
non-detectable Based on these sampling results, ERM, on behalf of
Heinz, submitted a request for site closure to the County on 21
September 1998
After reviewing the results, the County requested that further
investigation activities be conducted at the site In a letter dated 19
October 1998, the County requested that two additional monitoring wells
be placed in the area of each former UST The County requested that one
well be installed upgradient of each former UST location and one well be
installed downgradient of each former UST location The downgradient
wells are to be installed within 10 feet of each former UST excavation
The County requested the installation of these wells to confirm the
ground water gradient, document the size of the ground water plume,
and determine the contaminant concentrations within the plume
In a subsequent phone conversation on 29 October 1998 between ERM
and Mr Harlin Knoll of the County, Mr Knoll recommended that soil
samples be collected from the bottom of the monitoring wells to be
installed downgradient of each former UST location These soil samples
