1 <br /> Mr Harlin Knoll <br /> 22 May 1998 <br /> Page 2 <br /> 1 <br /> ERM prepared a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) report for <br /> the site on 25 August 1997 The ESA identified the possible existence of <br /> two gasoline USTs that had been abandoned in place ERM then <br /> conducted a Phase II ESA to determine if the tanks were present, and if <br /> so, to evaluate if they had become sources of subsurface soil and ground <br />' water contamination The results of the Phase II ESA confirmed the <br /> existence of the tanks (UST #1 located on the west side of the facility <br /> (Figure 2), and UST#2 located on the east (Figure 3)) The analytical <br /> results of shallow soil and ground water samples collected during the <br /> Phase II ESA indicated that concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons <br /> were present in soil and ground water in the vicinity of the two USTs <br /> Based on the results of the Phase II ESA, ERM, on behalf of Heinz, <br />' prepared and submitted an Underground Storage Tank Removal <br /> Workplan in January 1998 The County subsequently approved the UST <br /> Removal Workplan on 28 January 1998 <br /> SUMMARY OF WORK PERFORMED <br />' The following subsections present a summary of the work performed at <br /> L the site from 18 February 1998 through 1 May 1998 The subsections are <br /> organized to present a summary of the work performed at the site in <br /> chronological order The subsections are divided as follows <br /> Tank excavation and removal, <br /> • Additional soil excavation and ground water removal, <br />' a Soil and ground water investigation, and <br /> • Final site work <br />' The subsections below P resent a summaryof the procedures used for <br />' removing the USTs, excavation and disposal of soils, removal and <br /> disposal of ground water, backfilling and resurfacing the tank pits, <br /> installing monitoring wells, and soil and ground water sampling The <br />' results of soil and ground water sampling performed during each phase <br /> of work are also presented <br /> Tank Excavation and Removal <br /> On 18 February 1998, UST #1 and UST #2 were removed from the site <br /> ERM-Enviroclean, Inc , of Walnut Creek, California, was retained to <br />
