1
Mr Donald Kirk Page 2
' September 22, 1997
. The Heinz facility has produced tomato food products, including ketchup and
tomato paste, since its construction in 1946 The Iand on which the site was built
' was previously used for agricultural purposes
' PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS
' In August 1997, ERM conducted a Phase I site investigation at the site in general
conformance with ASTM Standard Practice E 1527-97 ERM's conclusions and
recommendations, as presented in a final Phase I Environmental Site Assessment
Report dated August 25, 1997, were as follows
• There is evidence that two underground storage tanks (USTs) may still be
' present at the site Although little information about these tanks was
available, anecdotal information suggests that they may have been closed in
place in accordance with regulatory requirements current at the time These
tanks are potential sources of subsurface soil and ground water
contamination
• Areas to the north and south of the forklift shop are or were used for the
storage of lube oils, waste oil, solvents and diesel fuel Significant surface
. staining was observed in these areas during the site reconnaissance Because
of this evidence, these areas represent potential sources of soil and
groundwater contamination
• Based on the findings of the Phase I ESA, ERM recommended that additional
investigation be conducted in the referenced UST and Forklift Shop areas
' The recommended additional investigation included collection of soil and
ground water samples and laboratory analyses for various petroleum
' hydrocarbon and volatile organic constituents
' SCOPE OF WORK
This section describes Phase_II ESA activities performed by ERM
Based on the collective findings from the ERM Phase I ESA, and on the scope of
' work presented in our proposal, ERM performed a shallow soil and ground
water investigation at the site which included the following
•
