l
Mr Michael Infurna
Drillingand Soil Sampling
On August 15, 2002, V&W Drilling (C57 720904) advanced two soil borings, MW4 and MW5,
which were subsequently converted into groundwater monitoring wells The locations of the
borings/monitoring wells are shown on Figure 2
A hollow stem auger rig was used to advance the borings Soil samples were collected at 5 foot
intervals using an 18-inch long core sampler lined with new 2-inch diameter brass sleeves, affording
soil identification and subjective evaluation for contamination A photoionization detector (PID) was
used to monitor the presence of volatile organic compounds in the soil Since no field evidence of
contamination was noted in either boring, the soil samples collected from the capillary fringe and
from the bottom of the borings were selected for analysis These samples were sealed, labeled, and
immediately placed in an iced cooler and transported to Argon Laboratories (ELAP 2359) under
chain of custody protocol
All drilling and sampling equipment was decontaminated prior to use and between sample collection
events to minimize the possibility of cross contamination
Soil and rinsate generated during drilling activities was placed in DOT approved 55-gallon drums
Both waste streams are currently stored on site pending disposition for proper disposal
Well Construction
Based on the historical range of water levels at the site (Table 3), wells MW4 and MW5 were each
screened from 10 to 30 feet bgs The wells were constructed of 2-inch diameter, Schedule 40 PVC
casing and 0 020 inch slotted screen The filter pack consists of#3 silica sand The annular seal in
each well is constructed of 2 feet of hydrated bentomte overlain by neat cement grout Monitoring
well construction details are summarized in Table 4 Boring/well construction logs are included in
Attachment A
Well Development and Groundwater Sampling
On August 20, 2002, the wellhead elevations of the new monitoring wells were surveyed to a vertical
accuracy of 0 01 feet and a horizontal accuracy of<1 meter Water levels were then monitored, and
the wells were developed and sampled
Prior to well development, static depth to groundwater was measured in each well Measurements
are summarized in Table 3 Monitoring data sheets are included in Attachment B The new wells
were then developed by surging and bailing until turbidity was minimized Temperature, pH, and
electrical conductivity were measured during the well development process Purge water was placed
into DOT approved 55-gallon drums, which are currently stored on site pending disposal
Groundwater samples were collected from each well after appropriate groundwater recovery, were
placed in a chilled ice chest and were transported under chain of custody to Argon Laboratories for
. analysis Well development and purge logs are included in Attachment B
G WaWGROUNDZEMOOLSEY CHT1RepoAs\WELLRPT—MW4_MW5 doe
