Y
Working To Restore Nature
detected in wells MW5 and MW6 Soil analytical results from Phases I and II are summarized
in Attachment 1 The appropriate extent of soil contamination at depth is illustrated on Figure
3
In December of 1959 Bio National Corporation installed a cycle skimmer pump and prototype
- - biologic-treatment system for-operation-on effluent from MWl - The skimmer pump-had-limited --
success in free product removal due to the apparent small volume of floating free product and
low pumping yields
RESNA (formerly WaterWork Corp ) was retained by Holt Bros to continue work at the subject
site On December 19, 1990 RESNA performed quarterly groundwater monitoring and
sampling Free product was observed in well MW I Laboratory analyses detected hydrocarbon
analytes and halogenated volatile organics in monitoring well MW5 Groundwater flow beneath
the site was determined to be southwesterly, which is consistent with observations in Dames &
Moore's earlier reports
On January 9, 1991 RESNA performed a short term step drawdown test and longer term (4
hour) constant rate pumping test using well MW6 The step test indicated the well does not
exhibit significant well losses and is reasonably efficient However the zone of contamination
does not yield appreciable volumes of water, making groundwater extraction unattractive This
is discussed in detail in RESNA's April 19, 1991 Progress Report/Remediation Feasibility Study
for the subject site
At the request of PHS/EHD, RESNA performed quarterly monitoring and sampling in July
1992, March 1993, and September 1993 Free product or sheen was observed during these
episodes in well MW 1 Free product thickness was measured at less than 0 04 feet Laboratory
analyses detected hydrocarbon and halogenated volatile organic constituents in MW5. Low
levels were also detected in well MW6 in March and September, 1993 Groundwater flow
beneath the site was to the southwest Groundwater monitoring data is included as Table 1
Groundwater results of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents and halogenated volatile organics
(VOCs) are included as Tables 2 and 3, respectively
A project meeting was held on August 26, 1993 at the PHS/EHD office to discuss the status of
the project The meeting was attended by Ms Margaret Lagorio of PHS/EHD and
representatives of Holt Bros and RESNA Discussion during the meeting concluded soil
excavation and on-site bioremediation/aeration to be the most probable effective method for
removing the bulk of the contaminated soil at the site However, adjacent buildings and
structures may limit the excavation boundaries The PHS/EHD requested a workplan addressing
soil excavation and remediation
l

0W(}4021REP0RTSIWY-1193 FNL 2
