6 November 1995
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0148
4.0. PROCEDURES
4.1. INSTALLATION OF SOIL LYSMIETERS AND SOIL SAMPLING
For the installation of the lysimeters, the following procedures will be performed:
1. Notify the CVRWQCB at least 72 hours prior to commencement of any work.
2. Drill four borings using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with continuous-flight, 8-inch
diameter hollow-stem augers. Each boring will be drilled to a depth of approximately 5 feet.
3. Steam-clean auger flights after each boring.
4. Complete each boring as two-inch diameter lysimeters in accordance with manufactures
specification. Lysimeter design is depicted in Figure 3.
5. Collect soil samples from the clay cap during the advancement of each boring, using an 18
inch split tube sampler.
6. Label soil samples on a chain-of-custody form.
7. Transport the soil samples to a State certified lab for permeability testing, by ASTM D.5084.
4.2. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS OF LYSIMETERS
For the collection of water samples from each lysimeter, the following procedures will be performed:
1. Prepare each lysimerter for sampling by removing installation water from each lysimeter.
2. Apply a vacuum of 18 to 20 inches of Mercury to the lysimeter.
3. Allow for vadose water to penetrate the porous receptacle in the lysimter.
4. Isolate the porous receptacle, then apply 15 psi of pressure to the lysimeters and collected
sample in plastic containers.
5. Label water samples on a chain-of-custody form.
6. Store samples in ice and transport to a State certified laboratory for total lead, total dissolved
solids (TDS) and turbidity by EPA methods 200.9, 160.1 and 180.1, respectively.
7. In the event that less than 50-m1 of vadose water is collected from the lysimters, laboratory
analysis of the sample will not occur for total lead, due the minimum volume required to
perform EPA method 200.9.
