R. Simplot Company(OCC) are investigating the extent of
groundwater contamination resulting from 38 years of agricultural chemical distribution
operations at 1904 Charter Way in Stockton. OCC conducts groundwater sampling from 25
monitoring wells at and downgradient from this site. We have reviewed the following reports
prepared by Geomatrix, OCC's consultant, describing the results of the groundwater monitoring
events.
• October 1999 Second Trimester 1999 Monitoring Report
• February 2000 Third Trimester 1999 Monitoring Report
• May 20001999 Annual and First Trimester 2000 Monitoring Report(1999 Annual Report)
• October 2000 Second Trimester 2000 Monitoring Report
• February 2001 Third Trimester 2000 Monitoring Report
• June 2001 2000 Annual and First Trimester 2001 Monitoring Report(2000 Annual Report)
The monitoring reports are well written and contain a good description of the site history and
investigations to date. The 1999 Annual Report additionally contains results of field tests and
general mineral analyses that OCC performed on the groundwater for two years to assess the
potential for bioremediation. The mineral analyses include nitrate, iron, manganese, and
dissolved organic carbon. These can be compared to the field parameters of dissolved oxygen
(DO) and oxidation reduction potential(ORP) to identify if biodegradation status could be
approximated with either DO or ORP. This will be more important if OCC wishes to pursue
bioremediation of groundwater.
In the Third Trimester 1999 Monitoring Report, Geomatrix reports that a third party has
validated the analytical data for four consecutive years and that the analytical laboratory
satisfactorily meets objectives. This data validation is not required in Monitoring and Reporting
California Environmental Protection Agency
Q, Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption. For a list of
simple ways you can reduce demand and cut your energy costs, see our Web-site at http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/mgcb5
