PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION AND EVALUATION REPORT
Puregro Company
1904 West Charter way
Stockton, California
INTRODUCTION
In accordance with a request from Mr. James DeMera Of Mullen,
Sullivan and Newton (MSN) , Geological' Audit Services, Inc.
(GeoAudit) has performed a soil and groundwater investigation of
the property located at 1904 West Charter Way (Puregro Company) ,
Stockton, California (the site) . Four groundwater monitoring wells
and one additional soil boring were installed at the site. The
location of the site is illustrated in Figure 1. A plan of the site
is illustrated in Figure 2 .
BACKGROUND
Puregro Company operated a fertilizer warehouse facility in a
relatively flat area zoned for commercial use in the southern part
of Stockton (Figure 1) . It is our understanding that two
underground storage tanks (UST's) and related piping were removed
from the site in 1990. Both UST's contained unleaded gasoline and
were 1, 000 gallons in capacity. Numerous holes were noted in the
piping during removal, but the condition of the tanks was not
recorded.
The excavated soil, which emitted strong hydrocarbon odors, was
stockpiled on plastic sheeting. This soil remains on ✓✓site. No
samples have been collected from the stockpile for laboratory
analysis.
Four soil samples were collected from the tank excavation and
removal and analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPH-g) and volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (BTE&X) . All samples
contained detectable concentrations of TPH-g, ranging from 1100
mg/kg to 5000 mg/kg. All samples also contained BTE&X compounds
(see report by Weston Consultants, dated 29 March 1990) .
Geological Audit Services, Inc. was retained to assess the 4teral
and vertical extent of contamination at the site. No monitoring
wells were reported to be located on the property. However, during
the assessment a single 2-inch monitoring well (designated MW-5v
was discovered on the property approximately 200 feet southeast of
the former tank excavation. The well was found to have a total
depth of approximately 20 feet.
No record of well permitting or installation was available from the
San Joaquin County Public Health Services - Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD) concerning MW-5. However/a review of PHS/EHD
files indicated that a single 6, 000-gallon diesel UST was removed
from the area in June of 1987 by Western Meter. No analytical
