In his 15 January 2002 email
transmission, Mr. Tim Souther of Geomatrix provided me with the results of sidewall and bottom
confirmation samples from the excavation and verification samples from the treated soil. He also
submitted the 9 January 2002 Work Plan to Repair Monitoring Well MW-15 and Replace
Monitoring Well MW-5a.
The excavation sidewall samples on the north, south and east meet the target cleanup levels
(TCLs) specified in Geomatrix' June 2001 Soil Remediation Plan and approved in our 27 June
2001 letter. The west sidewall does not meet the criteria, and Geomatrix is continuing to
excavate and treat soil along the west side. As Mr. Souther stated, excavation will continue until
confirmation samples of the west wall meet the TCLs. The excavation has removed ontaminants
from the surface to groundwater(eight feet below ground surface). In the western portion of the
base of excavation, 1,2-dichloropropane and dibromochloropropane are still detected at
concentrations above their respective TCLs. Since the excavation base coincides with the
groundwater table and these compounds are found in groundwater, further excavation below the
water table will not provide additional source removal benefits. When the confirmation samples
for the west wall meet or exceed the TCL, the excavation may be backfilled. The analytical
results documenting the level of treatment achieved from the low temperature thermal
destruction show that the treated soil meets the established TCLs and is suitable to be returned to
the excavation.
California Environmental Protection Agency
pa Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real.
