• Once driven into position, the disposable tip of the sampling device will be deployed by
retracting the sampler rods approximately 4.5 feet, exposing the full screened interval. A 0.5-
inch diameter, new disposable PVC bailer will then be used to withdraw the groundwater
sample.
• If the saturated zone is not encountered during the first HydropunchTM attempt, the sampling
device will be removed from the borehole, and the borehole advanced to the total depth of the
initial attempt. A second HydropunchTM attempt will then be made. This process will be
repeated until the saturated zone is encountered, and a groundwater sample is collected.
• Once collected, samples will be placed in laboratory-prepared sample containers in order of
the volatility of the target analytes. Samples will be decanted from the bailer into the sample .
containers with minimal sample agitation and aeration. For volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), the sample containers will consist of 40-m1 glass vials with Teflon""-lined septa, and
containing dilute (50%) hydrochloric acid as a preservative. During containerization of the
VOC samples, the 40-m1 glass vials will be filled to slightly overflowing, forming a meniscus
at the opening of the container. The cap will then be secured to the top of the vial. The vial
will be inverted and gently tapped and examined for the presence of bubbles. If air bubbles
are observed in the vial, additional sample is added to the vial. If air bubbles are still present
in the vial, the sample will be discarded and a new vial will be utilized.
• Groundwater samples will be labeled with a distinct identification number, the date and time
of collection, the sampler's initials, any sample preservatives, and the desired analyses.
Sample bottles will also be secured with a custody seal which will overlap the cap and will be
labeled with the same information.
• Once collected and prepared, samples will either be immediately delivered to a mobile
laboratory for on-site analysis, or placed in a cooler with ice for delivery to a fixed-base
laboratory for analysis. A chain-of-custody form will accompany the samples at all times and
will include the site location, the project number, name of sampler, sample numbers, dates and
times of collection, number of containers, and analyses requested.
• Following completion of the groundwater sampling, the soil borings will be filled with a
cement grout mixture to the ground surface in accordance with ADWR R12-15-816. The
grout will be allowed to settle and set up, and then the soil boring will be refilled with grout.
The surface pavement will be patched (if required) with similar materials (asphalt cold patch
for asphalt pavement and concrete for concrete slabs or pavement).
• Any excess water from the HydropunchTM sampling will be stored in 55-gallon drums or
storage tanks pending characterization and disposal. Small quantities of wat 1
with the decontamination fluids.
11g
APR 16 1998
® ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
GEC Standard Operating Procedure PERMIUSERVICES
Last Revision December 1997 2
