The Geoprobe sampling was performed to evaluate the
potential lateral and vertical migration of TKN, Ammonia as AN, and Nitrogen as N in the soil
near the three formerly located bulk liquid fertilizer tank farm structures.
' BACKGROUND
The site is approximately a two acre parcel, located at the northeast comer of West Charter Way
' and Tillie Lewis Drive, in the City of Stockton, California, approximately one mile west of
Interstate 5 (Plate 1). Helena Chemical Company (HCC) stored farm chemicals (liquid and dry)
on site in a warehouse building. Liquid fertilizers were stored in three bulk tanks, and later
distributed in bulk quantities. The three bulk tanks were located in the northwestern portion of
' the property, and were recently removed under the supervision of the local fire department.
In September 2001, Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. collected five surface soil samples at the
' formerly located bulk tank farm area. Organophosphate, organochlorine, and total petroleum
hydrocarbons were not detected above laboratory reporting limits, and heavy metals were within
published background ranges. TKN and ammonia as AN were detected at elevated
concentrations. As a result, Mr. Doug Wilson of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health
' Division (EHD) requested that a site assessment work plan be submitted to the EHD to evaluate
the potential lateral and vertical migration of TKN and ammonia in the vicinity of the three
formerly located bulk tank farm structures. Geomatrix prepared and submitted a Soil
' Assessment Work Plan, dated November 20, 2001. At the request of Mr. Ed Brister of Helena
Chemical Company, Kleinfelder reviewed the Geomatrix work plan and performed the fieldwork
outlined in the work plan.
23-485060-1\SAC2R335 Page 1 of 5 July 30,2002
Copyright 2002 Kleinfelder,Inc.
KLEINFELDER 3077 Fite Circle, Sacramento, CA 95827_1815 __(916) 366-1701 (916)366-7013 fax _
