Harding Way
Stockton CA 95204
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)has reviewed the
Quarterly Report—Second Quarter 2001 dated August 20, 2001 that was prepared on your behalf by
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) and has the following comments.
The report documents site fieldwork that took place on April 18-19, 2001,when three groundwater
monitoring wells and one extraction well were installed. Soil samples for analysis were collected during
the advancement of the monitoring well boreholes. The wells were developed on April 27, 2001.
Groundwater samples for analysis were collected from MW-1 through MW-7 on April 12, 2001 and from
MW 10 on May 2, 2001.
As stated in the report, the soil analytical data collected to date indicate that the vertical and lateral extent
of the contamination has not been defined. The 20-foot below surface grade (bsg) soil sample from
MW-9 had 4,800 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg)Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon as stoddard solvent
(TPH-ss), and the 40-foot bsg sample had 3,100 mg/kg of TPH-ss. Soil samples from boring MW9 and
MW10 had concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) at 10,000 microgram per kilogram
(µg/kg), 1,2,4 trimethylbenzene and 100 pg/kg tetrachloroethene (PCE). The groundwater samples taken
from MW6, MWT and MW10 had concentrations of PCE and trichloroethene (TCE), which exceeded the
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)for public drinking water established by the State of California.
The report recommends installation of additional monitoring wells and borings to further assess the extent
of the contamination at this site. PHS/EHD agrees with this recommendation. PHS/EHD recommends
borings to be done north east of MW10 and west of MW5 to determine lateral and vertical extent of
contamination. Please submit a work plan to complete the investigation of the vertical and lateral extent
of the contamination at this site to PHS/EHD by January 21, 2002. In addition, quarterly groundwater
monitoring and sampling should continue until directed otherwise by PHS/EHD.
If you have any questions or comments please call Rebecca E.
