We do not object
to initiation of the pilot study, however, we have the following comments:
1. No bentonite will be placed in any ground water monitoring wells.
2. We remain unsure about the mechanism whereby the bacterial inoculum will move into upper
geological strata, particularly if the packers are placed at depths of 40 feet.
a. Depth of placement of the packers was not specified
b. Volume of inoculum per well or per inoculation was not specified
3. The monitoring program remains incomplete but we will be working on it the remainder of
the week.
4. 1 have enclosed copies of our reference regarding P. aeruginosa.
5. Between our meeting of 28 January and today, Board staff did not mention concerns about
"bacterial sludge". We did refer to a "shtg" of bacteria migrating through soil or ground
water. One purpose of this pilot study is to determine how the bacteria will move through
the soil. Our intention is that no impact to ground water will occur at during this study. If
you anticipate that bacterial "Sludge" will reach ground water during this study as proposed,
you must modify your proposal.
6. Background data on native and indigenous bacteria, soil characteristics, aquifer
characteristics, computer modeling, bench scale tests, and pilot tests should have been
collected prior to November 1993. Some of this data may be collected during the pilot test
and prior to initiation of full-blown remedialion
If you have any questions, call me at (916) 255-3133.
LLLFI'11ZA Tin A.
