After removal from the sampler, soil in the middle tube was
extruded into a plastic bag and screened for volatile organic
' compounds using a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10. 0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene) . The
reading was recorded on the boring log, and the soil was described
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (Appendix
A) . The ends of the lower tube were covered with aluminum sheets,
capped, sealed with tape and stored on ice pending analysis.
I3.2 .2 Well Completion
The three soil borings were completed as 4-inch diameter
' remediation wells, in accordance with the design shown in Appendix
A.
' 3 .2 .3 Soil Sample Analysis
A total of 32 soil samples were collected from the soil borings.
Thirteen of these samples were analyzed by Geochem Environmental
Laboratories for TPH as gasoline and BTE&X in accordance with EPA
methods 8015m and 8020, respectively.
4. 0 FINDINGS
4 .2 Groundwater Gradient and Direction
The depth to first groundwater ranges from 59 feet north of the
site to 61 feet southwest of the site. Figure 4 is a groundwater
gradient map, based upon the data collected on September 27 , 1993 .
Groundwater flow is south-southwest in the area.
' 4.2 Groundwater Contamination
TPH as gasoline, benzene and etlylbenzene were only detected in
samples from EW-1 (2 , 200 ppb; 1, 300 ppb; 76 ppb) and MW-14 (1, 400
' ppb; 160 ppb; 120 ppb) . Toluene was detected only in samples from
MW-12 and MW-14 at concentrations of 0. 87 ppb and 220 ppb,
respectively. Xylenes were detected in EW-1 at 190 ppb, as well as
' in MW-6 , MW--12 and MW-14 . The analytical results are summarized in
Table 3 . The laboratory report and chain-of-custody are included in
Appendix B.
' Lead was not detected in any of the water samples collected. EDB it
was detected only in MW-14, at 2 . 7 ppb. The analytical results are c
summarized in Table 3 . The laboratory report and chain-of-custody 1
' are included in Appendix B.
1, 2-Dichloroethane was detected in EW-1, NW-13 and MW-14 at
concentrations of 25 ppb, 12 ppb and 36 ppb, respectively. No other 1
volatile halocarbons were detected in any of the water samples.
f
9 l
