PROPOSED CLEANUP METHOD AT GEWEKE FORD
' 16 S. CHEROKEE LANE, LODI, CALIFORNIA
' EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The quality of the water we drink and of the air we breathe is
' critical to us all. Without any doubt, our resources need to be
protected and existing contaminated sites have to be cleaned up.
However, we need to employ effective cleanup methods that 1.) do not
' merely transfer the contaminants from one place to another, 2) keep
costs to the responsible parties affordable and 3) are
environmentally safe.
Upon removal of an underground gasoline tank system at the site,
soil and ground water contamination was discovered. Geological
Audit Services, Inc. is retained to mitigate the contaminants.
' After careful consideration, we believe that an in-place vapor
extraction program is the most effective method of cleanup for the
' contamination in the soil. The proposed process is quite
straightforward. Piping is inserted into the impacted soil and an
engine driven blower draws fresh air through the gasoline
contaminated soil into manifolded recovery wells. Gasoline-laden
vapor from the extraction manifold is drawn through a filter into
to the carburetion system of an internal combustion engine. The
' engine burns the gasoline vapor the same way an automobile engine
does. Regulated by a fuel control computer, natural gas is added as
necessary to maintain the proper air/fuel ratio for maximum
combustion. The exhaust from the combustion process is passed
' through a three-way catalytic converter for further oxidation.
A constant destruction rate of greater than 940 of the gasoline is
' maintained throughout the entire cleanup duration. This destruction
rate is better than that of an average and well-tuned car engine,
representing a negligible health risk factor, if any. This cleanup
project is calculated to be completed within 12 to 24 months.
For the water contamination, a filtration method is proposed. Water
is extracted from several wells and passed through carbon filters.
' The treated water is pumped back through the clean wells into the
ground.
r
r .
r :
