1 -
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
Geweke
March 11, 1998
Page 2
' COMMENT
The samples submitted for analyses revealed very low viable recoveries for heterotrophic and
' selective microorganisms at the dilutions tested. Sample P25-50 did not yield any viable cells.
It should be noted however, that organisms which were recovered from the samples
represented 100% contaminant biodegraders. In general, bionutrient conditions are well within
' the range of support for microbial growth and metabolism, except low moisture content is
likely responsible for the paucity of growth associated with sample P25-50. These results
suggest the possibility that some level of biotoxicity exists at the site, and efforts should be
' considered in order to further evaluate this possibility. Such biotoxicity can be due to
excessive levels of metals, salt, or other, as yet unidentified material. Alternatively, carbon
substrate (either contaminant-based or competitive forms) may be present at levels which are
' insufficient to support microbial growth and would thus help to explain the low growth values
obtained. It is possible that both conditions may coexist. An evaluation of analytical
chemistry associated with these samples (hydrocarbon levels 1 total carbon levels) would assist
in reconciling these results.
Should you have any questions concerning these results, please do not hesitate to contact me.
' AKK:ch
I
