Data from this study were used in
selecting the location of monitoring well MW-5 at the site. The
purpose of the study was to evaluate the distribution of soil and
ground water contamination detected during previous studies.
WEGE and Applied GeoSystems personnel were present on February
23 , 1987 and March 18, 1987 to conduct the vapor probe survey.
Ground water at the site was encountered at an approximate depth
of 40 feet below the ground surface. The vapor probe encountered
significant difficulty in penetrating a clayey section in the
subsurface between 15 and 25 feet in depth. As a result, only
two borings reached a depth sufficient to reach ground water.
A total of six borings were sampled during this survey. Holes 1
through 5 were drilled on February 23 and hole number 6 was
drilled on March 18 . Holes 1 and 6 were drilled at the northern
margin of the site, in an attempt to evaluate the possiblity that
hydrocarbons may be migrating onto the site from the service
station across Elm street to the north. Holes 2 and 5 were
located in order to delineate the extent of contamination at the
margin of the site down-gradient from the tank cavity. Holes 3
and 4 were drilled in order to evaluate the possibility of
gasoline leakage associated with the product lines and
dispensers.
