The
summary is followed by our recommendations for the installation
of a soil and ground water contamination mitigation system at the
site.
MW-5 was drilled in a location directly down-gradient from the
tank cavity on site, according to Applied GeoSystems' prior
calculations. The purpose of the well was to measure the degree
of contamination of ground water at the down-gradient margin of
the site, in order to evaluate the extent of possible off-site
contamination.
The results of laboratory analyses indicate that the levels of
contamination are significantly lower in MW-5 than in MW-1, MW-2 ,
or MW-4, which were installed nearer to the tank cavity at the
site. The hydrocarbon concentrations detected in MW-5 are below
action levels established by the California Department of Health
Services except for benzene. Ground water flow is oriented to
the south southwest, or toward MW-5 from the area below the tank
cavity. We interpret the results of chemical analyses to
indicate that dissolved contaminant migration has been limited,
and probably does not extend far beyond the limits of the site to
the south.
