Third Street
Hanford, California 93230
Subject: Report, subsurface environmental investigation, Beacon
Service Station #1-502, Lodi, California.
Dear Mr. McCutchen:
We are submitting two copies of our report regarding the
installation of three monitoring wells at the above-referenced
site. This work was completed in order to assess whether ground
water contamination has occurred as a result of leakage from
underground product storage tanks, after the discovery of diesel-
contaminated soil in the tank excavation during removal of the
diesel storage tank.
Subjective and chemical analyses of soil samples collected during
drilling showed no evidence of contamination. However, analyses
of water samples collected from two monitoring wells installed
immediately adjacent to the tank excavation showed high levels of
benzene, which is typically indicative of gasoline contamination.
Soil samples collected from the tank excavation showed
contamination with diesel fuel, while gasoline tanks in the same
excavation tested tight.
We are presently unable to conclude with certainty that the site
tanks are the source of the ground water contamination. Another
possible source is the service station to the north of the site,
across Elm street, which is directly up gradient from the two
wells. We have installed a monitoring well northwest of the site
tanks, which showed no evidence of contamination in water or soil
samples. However, by our calculations this well is not located
directly up gradient from the tank excavation.
