Mr. Kenneth Earnest
Ultramar Inc.
March 21, 1995
Page 2
previously contained supreme unleaded gasoline. Locations of the tanks and pump islands are shown
in Figure 2. The tanks were excavated by Walton Engineering in conjunction with Sacramento
Valley Crane, and transported by H&H Environmental Services to their facility in San Francisco,
California, for disposal. Personnel on-site to observe the tank removal included Mr. Jim Perry of
Delta, Mr. Jake Stryd of Ultramar, Mr. John Vagt of Ultramar, and Mr. Harlin Knoll of San Joaquin
County Public Health Services.
Fallowing the removal of the underground storage tanks and product fuel lines on February 2$, 1995,
soil samples were collected at the following locations as shown in Figure 3:
From depths of 15 or 16 feet beneath each end of each fuel storage tank (samples T1-A,
T1-B, T2-A, T2-B, T3-A, and T3-B).
From depths of 14 or 15 feet beneath the middle of the 12,000 gallon fuel storage tanks
(samples TI-C and T3-C).
From depths of 6 or 7 feet beneath each end of each pump island (samples Pll-A, PII-B,
P12-A, and P12-B).
. A From a depth of 4 feet beneath the product lines leading to the pump islands (sample
PL 1-A).
On March 2, 1995, the tank basin excavation was deepened and soil samples were collected at the
following location as shown in Figure 4:
From a depth of 26 feet at the north end of the fuel storage tank overexcavation (samples
TB-1, TB-2, and TB-3).
On March 9, 1995, additional excavation work was conducted in the vicinity of the pump islands and
soil samples were collected at the following locations as shown in Figure 5:
• From a depth of 15 feet in an excavation between the pump islands (sample Pll-C).
• From a depth of 9 feet beneath the east end of the north pump island (sample PII-D).
• From a depth of 8 feet beneath the west end of the south pump island (sample PI2-C).
I
Soil Sample__Analytical Results
The soil samples collected from the excavations were submitted to West Laboratory (West) in Davis,
California, for laboratory analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), and TPH
as a gasoline. All samples except samples TBA, TB-3, Pit-C, PI1-D, and P12-C were also analyzed
for lead using the Waste Extraction Test (WET) method (EPA Method 7421). Analytical results are
summarized in Tables I and 2, and copies of the analytical reports are included in Enclosure A.
