FAX:916/638-8385
February 3, 1995
Mr. Harlin Knoll
Environmental Health Division
Public Health Services
San Joaquin County
445 North San Joaquin Street
Stockton, California, 95201
Subject: Work Plan for Well Destruction
Beacon Station No. 502
35 North Cherokee Lane
Lodi, California
Delta Project No. D093-907
Dear Mr. Knoll:
Delta Environmental Consultants, Inc. (Delta), has been authorized by Ultramar Inc. (Ultramar) to
destroy four soil vapor extraction wells at Beacon Station No. 502, located at 35 North Cherokee
Lane, Lodi, San Joaquin County, California. The wells are located adjacent to underground fuel
storage tanks which are to be removed in approximately two to three weeks. The location of the site
is shown in Figure 1 and a site map is included as Figure 2.
Project Background
The presence of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil beneath the site was detected during lining of
underground fuel storage tanks in 1987. Since that time, investigative activities at the site have
included the installation of five ground water monitoring wells, measurement of water levels in the
wells to determine ground water flow direction, and sampling of the wells to evaluate ground water
quality. Remedial activities included the installation of a soil vapor extraction system, which was in
operation at the site from 1989 to 1992. Ground water is present at the site at a depth of
approximately 50 feet below surface grade.
Scope of Work
The proposed work includes destruction of soil vapor extraction wells VW-5, VW-7, VW-8, and
VW-9. Each well is constructed of 2-inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC casing and is approximately
40 feet deep. The wells are to be destroyed by pressure grouting with a neat cement/bentonite slurry.
The grout will be emplaced from the bottom up by pumping through a tremie pipe.
Enclosed are a well destruction permit and a check in the amount of$89. Due to the scheduled date
for tank removal, an expedited review of this work plan would be greatly appreciated.
Providing a Competitive Edge
