i .
INTERIM REMEDIATION PLAN
Insitu Soil Vapor Extraction System
Ultramar Service Station No. 502
35 North Cherokee Lane
Lodi , California
6 February 1992
INTRODUCTION
EVAX Technologies, Inc. (EVAX) has been retained by Ultramar Inc.
(Ultramar) to operate an insitu soil vapor extraction system (VES) at
Ultramar Station No. 502 located at 35 North Cherokee Lane in Lodi . This
document describes the Interim Remediation Plan for this site including
the site conditions, prior remediation, the VES feasibility study, system
design and risk assessment. A catalytic incinerator will be used for
abatement of the extracted soil vapors.
A VES was previously installed and operated at this site by EVAX
Technologies during the Fall of 1989. Consequently, the prior
construction of the system is beyond the scope of the present interim
remediation plan. The present plan basically involves the installation
of a 100 standard cubic foot per minute (scfm) catalytic incinerator for
economical long-term destruction of extracted gasoline vapors.
t' PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Soil vapor extraction involves the removal of volatile organic compounds
from subsurface soils by mechanically inducing air flow through the soil
matrix. This is accomplished by applying a vacuum to extraction wells
located in the plume. This insitu (in-place) approach to soil
remediation does not require excavation thereby avoiding large fugitive
emissions commonly associated with excavation and stockpiling activities.
` SITE DESCRIPTION
The subject site is an Ultramar Service Station located at the corner of
North Cherokee and Elm Streets in Lodi . The site is shown in Figure 1 of
Appendix A. Previous environmental work has been completed at this site.
