Mr.Nuel Henderson,Jr. • October 15,2002
ARCO Station 6100 Project No.U 6100
Work Plan Page 5
The existence or usage of the downgradient artesian well has not been verified. This will be
done as part of the field activities.
The proposed scope of work has been subdivided into tasks 1 through 5. All geologic work will
be conducted under the direct supervision of a State of California Registered Geologist, and will
be conducted in accordance with standards established by the Tri-Regional Board Guidelines for
Hydrocarbon Site Assessment and Remediation (CRWQCB, 1991) and SJC/EHD. A well
driller, holding a current C-57 license from the State of California, will perform all drilling and
well installation activities. Information regarding field practices and procedures is presented in
Appendix A.
Task 1. PRE-FIELD ACTIVITIES
Following approval of this work plan by SJC/EHD, Stratus will submit applications for four soil
borings and four groundwater monitoring wells to SJC/EHD. Permission to install two
additional borings/groundwater monitoring wells on the parcel south of the site will be solicited
from the property owner. An encroachment permit will be secured from San Joaquin County,
Department of Transportation (SJC/DOT) to install two additional borings/groundwater
monitoring wells in the county right-of-way. Stratus will secure well construction and well
destruction permits from SJC/EHD. Proposed drilling locations (shown on Figure 2) will be
marked in white paint as required by law, then Stratus will notify Underground Service Alert,
SJC/EHD, SJC/DOT, and the property owner of the work schedule.
Task 2: FIELD ACTIVITIES
Proposed field activities have been subdivided into two parts. Task 2a addresses activities
associated with advancing the proposed soil borings and installing the proposed groundwater
monitoring wells. Task 2b addresses the activities associated with the destruction of well
VW-15. Stratus will also attempt to verify the existence, location, and usage of the artesian well.
Task 2a: Soil Borings and Well Installation
The following section details those activities associated with 1) drilling the four soil borings
using mud rotary drilling methods, 2) collection of soil samples, 3) drilling adjacent borings and
installing monitoring wells using hollow-stem drilling methods, and 4) developing, sampling,
and surveying the newly installed monitoring wells. The proposed locations of the soil borings
and wells are shown on Figure 2.
Soil Borings and Sample Collection
The initial five feet of each boring will be advanced with a hand auger and/or posthole digger to
reduce the possibility of damaging underground utilities. A mud-rotary drilling rig will be used
to advance four exploratory soil borings (13-38 through B-42) to a depth of approximately 150
feet bgs. Non-petroleum based drilling mud will be used during drilling. The drilling mud will
have a density greater than the density of water to prevent water from flowing into the borehole
P:\Bp-Arco for URS\6100\Work Plans\6100 workplan-l.doc
