URS
Mr. Harlin Knoll
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
August 6,2002
Page 2
Sampling Procedures
Confirmation Samples
A backhoe bucket of native soil will be collected from each sample location and rapidly brought to the
surface. Approximately three inches of soil will be rapidly scraped away from the surface, and a clean brass
tube (at least three inches long) will be driven or pushed into the soil. Once the tube is filled with soil, the
ends will be covered with Teflon tape and plastic end caps. Once properly sealed, the sample will be
labeled, logged onto the chain-of-custody document, placed into an individual resealable plastic bag, and
placed on ice in an insulated cooler, pending shipment to Sequoia Analytical Laboratories in Sacramento,
California,for analysis.
Stockpile Samples
Samples will be collected from random locations throughout the stockpile. At each location, approximately
3 inches of soil will be scraped away from the surface of the stockpile prior to sample collection. Samples
will be collected following the same procedures as the confirmation samples.
Sample Analysis
Samples will be analyzed within the appropriate holding times. Turn-around times for sample analysis will
be determined in the field. Samples will be analyzed for the following:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA)method 8015M.
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and total xylenes(BTEX)by EPA method 8021.
• Methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), ethyl tert-
butyl ether(ETBE),and tert-amyl methyl ether(TAME)by EPA method 8260B.
• Total lead by EPA method 6010B (stockpile samples, only).
Report Preparation
At the completion of the field activities, a UST closure report will be prepared. Included in this report will
be a summary of the overexcavation activities, the results of the confirmation sampling, and a discussion of
the soil stockpile disposal.
If you have any questions or comments, please call me at(916)679-2299.
Sincerely, C ?ED GEO
URS Corporation Americas oN PAUL F9G'id,
s
No. 7120
Vernon Elarth,R.G.7120 Exp.
Project Manager Q.
s
SL/hr OF CAS-
cc: Mr.Paul Supple,Atlantic Richfield Company
Mr.Marty Hartzell,RWQCB,Central Valley Region
K:U5 BP ARCO\00434\UST Removal\WorkPlan.doc
