:2
V
Results of Initial Investigation and Work Plan
.. ARCO Service S`ation No. 760, Lodi, CaliforniaS 380448-48-4
ia December 18, 1990

Bonn and iI am lin
Applied GeoSystems was at the site between May 30 and.lune 1. 1990, to observe Wayne
Drilling Company of Uncoln,California, drill two 8-inch diameter soil borings(B-1 and B-3)
and one 7-inch diameter soil boring(B-2)near the former waste-oil tank cavity. Boring B-2
was drilled through pea gravel in the center of the former waste-oil tank cavity inside a 12-
inch diameter auger which limited the borin °diameter to 7 inchesThe a c
g . Prbximai
locations of the soil borings along with other site features are shown on PIate P-2.
On October 5, 8 and 9, 1990, we observed Wayne Drilling Company drill five additional fl-
inch diameter soil borings (8-4 through B-8). The locations of the borings were selected
using ARCO's Preliminary Tank Replacement Assessment guidelines. Boring B-4 was
drilled approximately 2-1/2 feet from the not3h edge of the tank area near the fill ends of
k the three product tanks; borings B-5 and B-6 were drilled just west and east of the tank
Feld, respectively. Borings B-7 and B-8 were drilled in the area proposed as the new tank
cavity. The locations of the soil borings are shown on Plate P-2.
t$
Soil samples were collected during drilling at approximately 5-foot intervals and were
classified according to the Unified Soil Classificatior.System (Plate P-3). Descriptions of
materials encountered are presented in the Logs of Borings(Plates P-4 through P-20). The
materials in the eight soil borings consistrt!predominately of sandy silt and silt with minor
amounts of clay. The Logs of Borings drilled near the gasoline tank cavity show fine- to
coarse-grained sand and a trace nnimAy,q :..{fine-grained gravel.
d
The geologist used a photoionization detector (PID) to evaluate the soil samples for
hydrocarbon vapors. PID readings are also included on the Logs of Borings. The geologist
noted positive PID readings and .ected subjective evidence of gasoline hydrocarbons such
AVAR1ied GeOSystems ----
