FAX:916/638-8385
December 4, 1995
Mr. Kenneth Earnest
Ultramar Inc.
525 West Tbird Street
Hanford, California 93230
Subject: Work Plan for Confirmation Soil Borings
Beacon Station No. 695
900 South Cherokee Lane
Lodi, California
Delta Project No. D093-915
Dear Mr. Earnest:
Delta Environmental Consultants, Inc. (Delta), has been authorized by Ultramar Inc. to confirm the
effectiveness of soil vapor extraction at Beacon Station No. 695, located at 900 South Cherokee Lane,
Lodi, San Joaquin County, California(Figure 1). The proposed work includes drilling and sampling
of six soil borings, and if warranted the completion of selected borings as soil vapor extraction wells
(Figure 2).
Project Back and
A soil vapor extraction system began operating at the site in July 1991. The underground fuel
storage tanks were removed in January 1994. Ground water is present in monitoring wells at a depth
of approximately 70 feet below surface grade (bsg). As of September 20, 1995, 45,189 pounds
(7,319 gallons)of vapor equivalent gasoline has been extracted from the soil underling the site. Soil
vapor sample analytical results indicate concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil have been
reduced to acceptable levels.
Scogs of Work
The proposed work includes drilling six soil borings to depths of 65 to 70 feet bsg at locations shown
in Figure 2. Soil samples will be collected from each soil boring at 5-foot intervals and will be field-
screened for the presence of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors with a approved field screening device.
Selected soil samples from each boring will be submitted for laboratory analysis of benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEI) using EPA Method 8015, total petroleum hydrocarbons
(TPH) as gasoline, and TPH as diesel using EPA Method 8015 Modified. The methods to be used
to drill and sample the soil borings are described in Enclosure A.
Selected borings may be completed as soil vapor extraction wells depending upon field screening
results and/or laboratory results. If decided that soil vapor extraction wells are to be constructed,
2-inch diameter, flush-threaded, Schedule 40 PVC casing will be used. If conditions warrant,
multiple strings of casing may be run within each boring. Proposed soil vapor extraction well
construction details are included in Enclosure B.
Providing a Competitive Edge
