o.
Mr. Kenneth Earnest
Ultramar Inc.
October 22, 1993
Page 2
soil sample will be collected from beneath the former distribution lines for each 20 linear feet of
piping, and one soil sample will be collected from beneath each of the former product dispensers.
Additional soil samples may be collected from overexcavated trenches by Delta at the discretion of
the San Joaquin County representative at the site. Four soil samples will be collected from each 50
cubic yards of stockpiled soil, with each sex of four samples to be composited in the laboratory prior
to analysis. Soil samples will be collected in 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long brass tubes, which will
be sealed with Teflon tape and plastic caps. The samples will be stored in an ice chest cooled to 4°C
for transport to the laboratory.
Soil samples will be submitted to a state-certified laboratory for analysis. The samples collected from
beneath the product distribution lines, dispensers, and the underground tanks containing gasoline will
be analyzed for concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)as gasoline. Samples collected from beneath the product distribution
lines, dispensers, and the underground storage tank containing diesel will be analyzed for BTEX,and
TPH as diesel. The composite samples from the soil stockpiles will be analyzed for BTEX,TPH as
diesel and/or TPH as gasoline. In addition, the two composite samples with the highest
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons will be analyzed for halogenated volatile organic
compounds and the following metals: arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead,
mercury, nickel, and zinc. The halogenated volatile organic compounds and metals are being
analyzed for acceptance of excavated soils at the Forward Inc. landfill. The samples will be analyzed
using methods approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department
of Health Services.
Remarks/Signatures
Delta recommends that a copy of this letter be forwarded to:
Ms. Linda Turkette Mr. James B.
