i
Mr Kenneth Earnest
Ultramar Inc
. May 21, 1996
Page 3
TPH as gasoline ranged from 2 2 (SB-3) to 5,700 (SB-6) mg/kg, some of the laboratory results
reported as TPH as gasoline were noted by the laboratory to be not typical gasoline, but rather
weathered gasoline, which is consistent with previous analytical results at this site Detectable
concentrations of TPH as diesel ranged from 2 (SB-2) to 17,000 (SB-3) mg/kg
Conclusions and Recommendations
Based on review of the analytical and soil type data gathered to date, the SVE system has been more
successful to removing hydrocarbons from the sand/silt units than the silt/clay units It has been
Delta's experience in cases containing areas with clay/silt units, the remedial alternative of excavation
with disposal of the soil is neither feasible or cost effective given the depth (60 feet) of impacted
silt/clay units and the site being an active service station owned by a second party
Based on these observations, the amount of hydrocarbons removed from the site, the maximum
benzene concentrations reported in soil during this investigation were 18 mglkg, and that the
hydrocarbons remaining in the soil may not pose a significant threat to human health Delta
recommends that the data collected to date be summarized, and the site be evaluated using a risk
based corrective action to determine if closure or further corrective action is warranted
. Remarks and Sigpatures
The interpretations contained in this report represent our professional opinions, and are based to part
on information supplied by the client These opinions are based on currently available information
and are arrived at in accordance with currently accepted hydrogeologic and engineering practices at
this time and location Other than this, no warranty is implied or intended
We recommend that copies of this report be forwarded to
Ms Linda Turkette Mr James B Maughan
Environmental Health Division California Regional Water Quality
Public Health Services Control Board, Central Valley Region
San Joaquin County 3443 Routier Road
Post Office Box 2009 Sacramento, California 95827
Stockton, California 95201
•
