(Ground Zero) performed a subsurface
investigation at the subject site. The purpose of the investigation was to determine if past use of
the property as a truck yard had impacted soil and/or groundwater beneath the site. Figure 1
shows the location of the site.
BACKGROUND
The Tiger Lines facility previously operated as a full-scale trucking yard. The site previously
housed four 20,000-gallon aboveground diesel storage tanks (ASTs) and four 10,000-gallon
gasoline ASTs for truck fueling. The ASTs were located in a secondary containment structure.
The previous location of the secondary containment structure is shown on Figure 2.
In 2003, the ASTs and the secondary containment structure were removed, exposing the soil
beneath. Olfactory indications of a possible leak of diesel fuel prompted a preliminary soil
investigation. On September 22, 2003, an exploratory trench was opened within the confines of
the former secondary containment structure. The trench was advanced to 20 feet below the
ground surface (bgs). Hydrocarbon odors described as diesel-like were observed to total depth.
Soil samples were collected at 5 feet bgs, 10 feet bgs, 15 feet bgs, and 20 feet bgs. The samples
were delivered under chain of custody protocol to State-certified Argon Laboratory (ELAP No.
2359) for analysis. The suite of analyses included total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHg) and diesel (TPHd) by EPA Method 801513; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes
G:\GROUNDZBTIGER\REPORTS\Rcv'dSBmpon.doc
