Three recently installed groundwater monitoring
wells, MW-5, MW-6 and MW-7, were purged and sampled for the second time. The wells were
first sampled on June 24, 2008 following well development. At both events well MW-5 purged
dry before three well volumes of water were removed, and the pH of the water was reported to
exceed 11. MW-5 appears to be a compromised well. During the November event well MW-6
also purged dry, had an elevated pH and the technician performing the purge reported sheen on
the purge water. In correspondence dated October 14, 2008 the EHD requested that you report
and comment on any issues of concern with the performance of the monitoring wells, but no
comments were made in this report.
The laboratory analytical data report indicates that the total petroleum hydrocarbon quantified as
diesel (TPHd) analysis was performed using Silica Gel cleanup. Please note that this method of
TPHd analysis is not accepted by the Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley
Region (CVRWQCB). Silica Gel cleanup can be used to separate polar organics from non-polar
petroleum hydrocarbons. The CVRWQCB position is that the polar organics may be breakdown
products of petroleum hydrocarbons and may pose toxicity and/or taste and odor problems in
groundwater. Therefore, the EHD directs you to use EPA Method 8015M, without silica gel
cleanup, for analysis of TPHd.
You have been directed (EHD correspondence dated November 26, 2007), per California Code
of Regulations, Title 23, Chapter 30, Section 3890, to submit all reports of work performed,
laboratory data from chemical sample analyses, monitoring well elevation survey data, site
maps and quarterly groundwater depth measurements to Geotracker, the State Water
Resources Control Board database website. Reports and boring logs have been submitted, but
you need to become current with the submittal of all other required items.
