Soil samples
and grab groundwater samples were collected from each boring and submitted for laboratory
analysis. Five of the six grab groundwater samples had reportable concentrations of
petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants. The groundwater monitoring wells have been
developed but not sampled. In the Report TRC recommends initiating routine groundwater
monitoring and sampling of the wells. The EHD agrees with this recommendation. You are
directed to begin routine quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling of the new wells by
the end of this year, and to continue until directed otherwise by this agency. Please note that
all site fieldwork, including routine quarterly events, require 48 hours notice to the EHD.
Reviewing the reported groundwater elevations, it appears the depth to water measurements
used in the calculation were taken after the wells were developed. The groundwater gradient
and flow direction should be determined from the depth to water measurements taken after
all wells have been opened to the atmosphere and allowed to stabilize to the ambient air
pressure, and before any purging begins. Please follow this procedure at all future
groundwater monitoring events. In addition, MW-5 may be a compromised well. During
development the well purged dry after 10 gallons were removed and the pH value was high.
Wells MW-6 and IVIW-7 did not have problems recharging, though they did have greatly
fluctuating pH values. These issues must be observed during the next quarterly event, and
addressed in the quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling report.
