Ms Lon Duncan
July 14, 1999
Page 2
from the spoil pile had 170 mg/kg TPH-diesel (BTEX compounds were not analyzed from the
spoil pile)
SCOPE OF WORK
We have developed the following work scope to address these issues The proposed scope of
work is described below
Task I- Soil and Groundwater Sampling
Soil borings will be drilled at five locations near the former underground tank locations Prior to
drilling, we will retain an underground utility locator company to survey the area of the planned
borings A licensed drilling contractor will be subcontracted to perform the drilling and
sampling One boring (B-1) will be drilled to approximately 50-feet (ft)below grade (bg) at the
east end of the former diesel tank Four borings will be drilled to 30-ft bg at locations
approximately 15- to 20-ft north, east, south and west of the of the 50-ft boring The planned
boring locations are shown on the attached figure The four 30-ft borings will be drilled using
direct-push technology(DPT) methods Drilling and sampling equipment will be cleaned prior
to each use The 50-ft boring will be drilled using hollow-stem augers
Soil samples will be collected at 5-ft intervals (beginning at 10-ft bg) to total depth in the borings
using a drive sampler equipped with a plastic liner in the direct-push holes, and brass tubes in the
hollow-stem auger hole The soil samples will be retained in the plastic liner and will be capped,
labeled and placed in an ice-chest for transport to the laboratory In boring B-1, the samples from
below 30-ft bg will be analyzed only if positive detections are found in the 30-ft sample A
photo ionization detector (PID) will be used to detect organic vapors in the field from drive
samples PID readings will be recorded on the boring logs
A groundwater sample will be collected from Boring B-1 using a clean disposable bailer that will
be lowered down the center of the augers The augers will be steam-cleaned prior to arrival on
site The groundwater sample will be placed in clean sample containers provided by the
laboratory Each sample container will be labeled and will be placed on-ice in and ice chest for
transport under chain-of-custody procedures to the analytical laboratory
A log of each boring will be prepared showing the materials encountered and the depth to
groundwater Each borehole will be backfilled with a cement/bentonite grout mixture Waste
soil and rinse water developed during site exploration will be placed in 55-gallon drums or
plastic sheeting on site pending receipt of analytical results
•
11 %?049U645Wordp1an doc 07/14/99
